What is NORML and what does the organization stand for?

NORML is a nonprofit, public-interest lobby that for more than 30 years has provided a voice for those Americans who oppose marijuana prohibition. We represent the interests of the tens of millions of Americans who smoke marijuana responsibly and believe the recreational and medicinal use of marijuana should no longer be a crime. NORML believes that marijuana smoking is not for kids and should only be used responsibly by adults. As with alcohol consumption, it must never be an excuse for misconduct or other bad behavior. Driving or operating heavy equipment while impaired from marijuana should be prohibited. NORML strongly supports the right of patients to use marijuana as a medicine when their physician recommends it to relieve pain and suffering. NORML has advocated for the legal use of medicinal marijuana since 1972.

About GEORGIA-NORML

We serve as Georgia's only operating NORML chapter. As a student group in Athens, GA established in 2008, our career goal is to reform campus, city, and state legislations to allow, decriminalize, or equalize cannabis for personal, medical, and industrial uses by removing the out-of-date and unjust penalties currently in place.

Our current goal is to have proposition 42 placed on the 2010 ballot. Proposition 42 would deprioritize marijuana for the ACC police force so they can concentrate on more serious offenses. Essentially if proposition 42 were adopted any possession less than 7 grams (.246 oz) would be a $100 civil fine.

In order to accomplish this goal we must demonstrate to the Athens city council that this is a pressing issue on the minds of our residence. To do this we are circulating a petition for those in support of proposition 42. There is an online version available here.

GA NORML believes drug abuse is a serious problem and believes if there is a more effective drug policy available we should act on it.
